Who am I?

Goetz Garden Deisgner

If you are stopping by and reading this, thank you for visiting. Here is a little about me. I live in the Puget Sound area of Washington State.

I can say I have gardened most of my life, but not always in a traditional sense because I didn't always have a "garden." I was that kid who grew the tops of pineapples in plates of water, poked toothpicks in the avocado seed, and annoyed the neighbor below our apartment when I grew tomato plants on a rooftop out my bedroom window. In high school, my bedroom was the only place in the house with plants; it was a bit of a houseplant jungle, and I loved it. After school, I moved to a 460-acre farm where I lived for 25 years. Growing herbs, vegetables, and flowers was a way of life. The design element of gardening came naturally, as I had previously worked in media, designing advertising layouts for print. Color, design, and graphic arts were part of what I did, so the progression to garden design was innate and self-taught.

My business grew from a desire to help people grow gardens and use plants. In 2004, my garden coaching, design, lectures, and freelance writing became a full-time business named Creative Gardener. I called it Creative Gardener, not because of my creativity, but because I want others to be inspired to do creative things in their own spaces. I enjoy watching that evolution working with people who are hobbyists who buy plants to a gardener who creates a garden.

I know people have many opportunities to learn how to garden but to be inspired by what plants and the spaces they grow in can truly do to make it their own is what drives the work I do.

It often happens that people I work with---already know how to dig a hole and grow plants, but the missing link is design---bringing it all together.

Gardens can be emotional and touch people—it's about the senses. If I can appeal to your senses and make you want to linger, discover, or simply spend time out, eat dinner, and relax with friends--- in the garden--- then I've done my job!
